Jimmy G got PAID

Jimmy G signed the largest contract in NFL History today. The Patriots traded him to the 49ers back in October for a 2nd round pick. Moment of silence please………………………………Ok. Now, there is no need to wait and see who that 2nd round pick turns into. The 49ers acquisition of Jimmy Garoppolo was an absolute steal. We all knew the day would come when Jimmy would get a nice contract but I don’t think anyone expected it to happen this quickly. He literally became the highest paid player in NFL History today based on average annual salary $27.5 million. He’s getting $90 million guaranteed in the first three years.

That’s crazy money for a QB with less than 10 starts in his career. I’m not here to bash him for getting paid and I’m happy for him. I will be cheering for Jimmy and will probably get a jersey to support him. However, I think the 49ers opened up the check book a LITTLE bit too early. Now, if Garoppolo goes on to win 5 Super Bowls and dominate for the next decade, you all can come back to this post and say, “hey Kof, you were wrong.” I absolutely think that he could go on to be the next big thing but I still think it’s a leap for the Niners to make him the highest paid player in NFL history when they could get a full season out of him by franchise tagging him. He seems to be happy in San Fran and that has a lot to do with the fact that he’s the starter, he has his own team to run now. Let’s see how it all shakes out.

Talk about setting the market. Next up – Kirk Cousins.
