Letter to Commissioner Manfred - rule change proposal - Rule 7.0 Ending the game

Commissioner Manfred,

I write to you today to propose a rule change to MLB Official Rule 7.0 - Ending the game. I understand that this rule has been in place for a very long time but the time has come that you must make a change. To be more specific, I would like to propose a rule change to 7.01 C & E

7.01 C

“If a game is called, it is a regulation game: 1. If five innings have been completed 2. If the home team has scored more runs in four or four and a fraction half-innings than the visiting team has

scored in five completed half-innings; 3.If the home team scores one or more runs in its half of

the fifth inning to tie the score.”

7.01 E

“If a game is postponed or otherwise called before it has become a regulation game, the umpire-in-chief shall declare it “No Game,” unless the game is called pursuant to Rules 7.02(a)(3) or 7.02(a)(4), which shall be a suspended game at any time

after it starts.”

With all due respect Commissioner, this rule is and always has been an absolute fucking joke. Please excuse my language but I am speaking for everyone when I say that the way I did. Why is a game completely nullified if 4 ½ innings are not completed. If a team is winning 5-0 after 1 inning, the game should be resumed at a later date that the weather permits, not cancelled. I don’t know what the rule makers were thinking back when they added this rule.

A perfect example is the Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles from last night, 7/25/18. The Red Sox lineup jumped all over Dylan Bundy, as expected (everyone in the lineup had a career homerun against him). They jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings but the game was then called/cancelled due to the rain. I understand that the umpires take part of the fall for this for even starting the game, that’s a completely different argument but we all know they wanted to earn their full fee. For those of you who don’t know, all umpires get a full game fee as soon as the home plate ump receives the game balls, even if they only end up playing 1 ½ innings. Regardless, let’s focus on the rule change I am proposing, it’s pretty simple:

Rule 7.01 K - for Kofsports

“If inclement weather prevents a game from being completed, the game shall be resumed from the same exact point in which it was postponed.”

This rule change will provide benefits for everyone involved. Fans who paid to attend the game, will be able to attend the same game when it is resumed and picked up at the exact point in which it was postponed. Baseball is historic for it’s statistics - all statistics from the game will still count with this rule in place rather than players losing out on the stats that they put up. Let’s face it, if you get a hit 3 out of every 10 at bats in Major League Baseball, you’re a Hall of Famer. Why should you lose out on your stats if you are 2-2 and the game is nullified? It doesn’t seem right to me. I do not understand why this rule was ever put in place and I believe that if we were sipping a beer together, you would agree with me.

Now, most importantly. Legalization of sportsbetting is coming and it is coming fast. It has already been legalized in multiple states and it will continue to spread like a wild fire. It has been put out there that Major League Baseball is preparing for this and will partner with each state to protect the integrity of the game. It’s not going to be a good look if someone bets on a team to win, that team takes a 5-0 lead, and then the game is cancelled because of weather.

Please consider this rule change and make the right decision.
