8/23 VIP Picks

8-2 since Monday and we are absolutely cooking this week! That Rangers +150 was a nice hit and that was a gift from Vegas with the numbers they had against Jackson. Today is a travel day for a lot of teams so we have some day action and not a full slate but let’s see what we have on the table.

Phillies / Nationals Under (7) - Aaron Nola and Max Scherzer must start for action in this one. The first two games of this series have gone WAY over 7 but today’s pitching matchup is looking like a pretty good one. Aaron Nola takes the hill for the Phillies and he has held this Nationals lineup to a .239 avg in 134 at bats. Nola has pitched 6+ innings and allowed 2 or less earned runs in 9 of his last 10 starts. Max Scherzer has held this Phillies lineup to a .193 avg in 259 at bats. He has gone 6 straight starts pitching 6+ innings and allowing 2 or less earned runs. I expect both starters to go deep into this game today and I expect them to dominate.

Red Sox (Price) (-215) - Ok, I know bold prediction taking a moneyline lower than -200. You guys who have been with me for a while know that I don’t typically give out picks below -200. However, since we hit a big +150 yesterday I figured you guys wouldn’t mind me throwing this one out there today. I’m not confident enough in the run line but I like the Sox on the moneyline. David Price has won 7 games in a row and he has gone 5 straight starts allowing 2 earned runs or less. He has been great as of late. He has held this Indians lineup to a .242 avg in 186 at bats. The Sox bats who came out to play last night will take on Adam Plutko who has been hit hard by worse lineups than the Red Sox. He is coming off of a loss to the Orioles, he’s allowed 3 earned in 4 innings to the Reds, 5 earned in 4.2 innings to the White Sox, and 5 earned in 5 innings to the White Sox. I expect the Red Sox to jump him early today. I know it’s a tough PRICE CHECK this afternoon but I’m more confident in the moneyline than the run line in this one.

Braves (Newcomb) (-190) - Sean Newcomb gets the start for the Braves and he has only allowed 1 earned run in 12 innings pitched against the Marlins today. He has held them to a .182 avg in 44 career at bats. The Braves will be up against Elieser Hernandez who has pitched as mostly a reliever this season. One outing that stands out to me is when he allowed 10 earned runs in 2.1 innings against the Nationals. I don’t see the Braves having any trouble getting Newcomb the run support he needs tonight.
