8/30 VIP Picks

1-1 last night on a slow night. “I’m picking them to cover the run line tonight in an absolute breakout game. They’ve struggled over the last week but I have them winning big tonight.” --- 14-6 with and 11 run inning, I’d say I nailed that one on the head. The first FULL weekend of college football kicks off tonight and we are ready to get the party started!

Brewers (Miley) (-132) - You long term members know that I don’t think highly of Wade Miley but I do like the matchup today. Miley has held this Reds lineup to a .138 avg in a small sample size of 29 at bats (about one full 9 inning game). Cody Reed will start for the Reds and he has been a relief pitcher for them this year. In a combined 26 at bats against him, this Brewers lineup has a .346 avg. I think that they will get to him early and be able to put up some runs for us today. How fitting to start Thirsty Thursday with the Brew Crew? It’s meant to be.

Rockies (Marquez) (-144) - When I think of Eric Lauer of the Padres, I think of his first start of this season when the Rockies scored 7 runs in 3 innings against him in an 8-0 win. Trevor Story hit a mammoth GRAND SLAM off of him. The thing about Lauer is that he has given up 5 earned runs or more 6 times this season. This game will be played in San Diego so the air won’t be as thin as Colorado but I still like this Rockies lineup to absolutely jump all over him. German Marquez has been great against this Padres lineup and has held them to a .218 avg in 55 at bats.

Red Sox (Porcello) (-190) - big moneyline price here for a team coming off of a big win. They traveled to Chicago after the game last night but going to the central time zone, they get an extra hour of rest before the game tonight. The Sox bats scored 11 runs in 1 inning last night which was nuts and covered the run line for us. Tonight they take on Lucas Giolito who comes in with a 5.85 earned run average and has got hit hard by good lineups this season - Yankees put up 7 earned in 5 innings, Astros put up 9 earned in 2 innings, hell the Orioles put up 7 earned in 1.1 innings. The Red Sox lineup should score some runs off of this guy. On the flip side, Rick Porcello gets the start and he has been Porcelblow in his last two but he is due for a good start. I like the RED Sox tonight.

Northwestern (+1) - At first glance, Northwestern is the obvious pick in this one and after doing further research I can confirm that NW is the play in this one. They would be favored if Senior starting QB Clay Thorson wasn’t listed on the injury report as “Questionable.” I expect this guy to play and I expect him to lead NW to victory. However, if for some reason he isn't playing I wouldn't be as confident in this pick. Wait as long as you can to put it in. I will tweet out and update when it is confirmed if he is playing or not. Northwestern has beat Purdue four years straight and I know that the teams who played four years ago don’t mean shit but this shows that NW has been the better program as of late. NW beat Purdue last year 23-13 and Purdue only has four players returning on defense. That makes me think that this defensive unit is going to be worse because they are young and inexperienced. NW is riding an 8 game winning streak and let’s not forget that they cracked the top 25 last year. I don’t care how crazy and how drunk the Purdue crowd is for their first ever prime time opener, Northwestern is the better team and they are going to win this game tonight.

Central Florida (-24) - The defending self procalimed “National Champs” open their season up on the road tonight against a BAD Uconn Huskies team. I saw a stat that only 38% of ranked teams that open on the road cover the spread but that isn’t making me think twice about this one tonight. Uconn finished just 3-9 last season while Central Florida went undefeated and topped it off with a win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl. All signs coming into this season is that UCF is expected to be as good, if not better. All of the “experts” are saying that UCF has potential to put up some of the best offensive numbers, ever. Granted they have a weak schedule and it all starts with a very weak team tonight, hence the line of -24. The Knights covered -24 in 8 of their 12 regular season games last year including a 25 point win over this Uconn team. News flash, 10 of the 11 starters on this Uconn defense are freshman and sophomores - 5 of each. If you think a defense this young in a program the caliber of Uconn (not good) is going to come in and shut down this high powered UCF offense, I think you’re high. This Knights team is playing with a chip on their shoulder from last season when they didn’t get into the College Football Playoff and they will start the season with an absolute blowout tonight. This game is being played in East Hartford but it should be being played in COVER CITY. Go Knights.
