Golf is back and the world's top golfers will tee off on Thursday morning at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Hawaii. This is the first PGA Tour event of 2024 so it gives us our first opportunity to bet on golf in the new year. Let's get into the 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions Picks as part of our PGA Picks for the 2024 season.
2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions Preview:
The 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions, taking place at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii, is set to be an enthralling event, featuring some of the top names in golf. This year, the tournament has expanded its field beyond the year's PGA Tour winners to include the top 50 players from the 2022–23 FedEx Cup points list, marking a significant change in its traditional format.
One of the favorites to win this year is FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland, who has had an impressive run with three PGA Tour titles last season, including the Tour Championship. He's joined by other world-class golfers, creating a highly competitive field. Despite defending champion Jon Rahm's absence, the lineup still boasts significant talent.
Scottie Scheffler, who defended his title at the Phoenix Open and won the Players Championship, is another strong contender. The field also includes other notable players like Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Ludvig Aberg, Tom Kim, Vincent Norrman, and Sahith Theegala, each bringing their unique strengths to the course.
Ludvig Aberg, in particular, is a player to watch. The young Swedish golfer has made a sensational start to his professional career, already ranking 32nd in the world with impressive achievements in his short career span.
The Plantation Course itself is a par 73, measuring 7,596 yards, known for its wide and generous fairways, which put a premium on accurate iron play and good putting. The course's location on the island of Hawaii means that wind is usually a significant factor, and the elevated tees could lead to some spectacularly long drives.

Top Five:
Scottie Scheffler (+130)
Scheffler will surely be in the mix to win this thing and he comes in as the betting favorite to win but we are targeting him to finish in the top five. Scheffler has finished in the top five in 9 of his last 11 events. He finished 7th at last year's event after posting 66 in each of the first two rounds, he fell off in the third and fourth round. He should be dialed in and be in contention this weekend.
Top Ten:
Viktor Hovland (-105)
Hovland comes in ranked 4th in the World Golf Rankings and he's finished top ten in two straight events. That includes 1st place finishes in the Tour Championship and the BMW Championship. Hovland finished 18th here a year ago and he hasn't ever finished in the top ten here. However, -105 odds for a top ten finish from him is great value this weekend. He finished 2023 strong and played his way up to #4 in the rankings so look for him to continue playing well this weekend.
