VIP Picks 10/10/23

We miss by 1 hit, 1 run, and 5 yards. TOUGH break Monday for us. Back at it today with MLB, College Football, and NHL Opening Night!

MLB:

4:07 EST

Astros (Javier) (+118)

  • We are going for another underdog with this one and it feels like a good one backed by Astros starting pitcher Cristian Javier who is 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA in the Postseason.

  • Javier has only allowed 1 hit in his last 11.1 innings pitched in the Postseason. He’s also held this Twins lineup to a .000 avg in a small sample size of 15 at bats.

  • Sonny Gray will pitch for the Twins and he’s had a great season ranking 3rd in ERA at 2.79. He did get to pitch against a lot of bad lineups all season though. The Twins went 2-0 in games the he pitched against the Astros this season but both of those wins came in extra innings.

  • The top hitters in this Astros lineup actually have pretty good numbers against Gray - Altuve, Bregman, Tucker, & Brantley are hitting .319 against him and Abreu has taken him deep before. Yordan Alvarez has 3 homeruns through his first 2 playoff games.

  • I’m confident Javier will turn in a strong performance and I trust this Astros lineup more than than the Twins lineup.

8:03 EST

Rangers (Eovaldi) (-135)

  • Experts say Eovaldi doesn’t have the stuff anymore but the numbers say he does, 6.2 innints, 1 run, & 8 strikeouts against the Rays in his last start.

  • Dean Kremer will pitch for the Orioles and this Rangers lineup comes in hitting just under .300 against him (.298). They also already beat him 5-3 earlier this season.

  • The Rangers have a lot of momentum after running off 4 straight road wins in the playoffs and now they return home. So much momentum that they are now listed as favorites to win the World Series.

  • I’ll back Eovaldi and a lineup that’s feeling good against a guy they’ve been good against in the past.

NHL:

8:00 EST

2 Day Parlay

Penguins ML / Bruins ML (-117)

  • All of the hype is on Blackhawks #1 pick Connor Bedard making his NHL debut but I’m not sure he can single handedly turn around the Blackhawks who finished witht he 2nd worst record in the league a season ago 26-49-7.

  • Petr Mrzek will be in net for the Blackhawks and he went 10-22-3 with a 3.66 GAA last season

  • The Penguins were aggressive in the offseason after just barely missing the playoffs last season for the first time in 16 years.

  • Their biggest addition was Erik Karlsson who was 3rd in assists last season.

  • Tristan Jarry will be in net for the Penguins and he went 24-13-7 last season.

  • The knock on the Penguins is that they are an older team but they should be fresh to start the season and the front office is clearly going for it this year. Let’s take them to win the Home Opener tonight.

  • Then we are betting against the Blackhawks again tomorrow night because the Blackhawks were 2-12 in back to back games last year.

  • They are also going on the road to face the Bruins who beat them 6-1 in Boston last season.

  • The Bruins were historically good in the regular season but an early exit in the playoffs should have them coming into this season plenty motivated.

  • Boston went 34-4-3 at home last season and the Garden will be rocking tomorrow night.

*I know there's college football tonight but I'm not crazy about betting on any of it. We also can't afford to just throw plays out there after the 0-3 start to the week.
