Clemson vs. LSU Prediction: Preview, Stats & Score Pick
Clemson and LSU meet under the lights in Baton Rouge on Saturday night in one of the most intriguing games of the opening weekend of the 2026 college football season.
The matchup is a rematch of last year's season opener, when LSU traveled to Clemson and came away with a 17-10 victory. This time the setting flips to Tiger Stadium, while both programs enter with major changes at quarterback and LSU begins a new era under head coach Lane Kiffin.
No. 11 LSU enters as the favorite, while Clemson arrives unranked following a disappointing 6-7 season. But Clemson finished 2025 considerably better than it started, winning its final four regular-season games, and Dabo Swinney's team has enough talent to make this much more interesting than the preseason rankings suggest.
Here's our full Clemson vs. LSU prediction, along with the stats, personnel changes and matchups that could decide Saturday night's game.

Clemson vs. LSU Odds
As of September 1, LSU is roughly a double-digit favorite, although the number varies by sportsbook. DraftKings was showing LSU -10.5 with a total of 51.5 on Monday, while broader market comparisons have shown Clemson as high as +9. Moneyline prices have generally placed LSU around -380 or shorter.
Because college football markets can move significantly as kickoff approaches, bettors should always check the current price rather than relying on an early-week number.
The betting market is clearly giving LSU a substantial advantage at home, but whether the Tigers can create enough separation offensively is one of the biggest questions in this matchup.
A Rematch That Looks Very Different One Year Later
LSU's 17-10 victory at Clemson last season was a defensive battle.
Clemson led 10-3 at halftime before LSU scored the game's final 14 points. LSU finished with 354 total yards, while Garrett Nussmeier threw for 230 yards and a touchdown. Clemson had opportunities, but LSU's defense kept the Tigers scoreless throughout the second half and secured the win with a late fourth-down stop.
A year later, many of the names have changed.
Clemson moves from Cade Klubnik to Christopher Vizzina at quarterback. LSU replaces Nussmeier with former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt. LSU also replaces Brian Kelly with Lane Kiffin, bringing one of college football's most established offensive coaches to Baton Rouge.
That makes last year's result useful context, but not necessarily a blueprint for what we'll see Saturday night.

When Clemson Has the Ball
The biggest storyline for Clemson is Christopher Vizzina.
Vizzina enters 2026 with only one career start, but that start provided a glimpse of why Clemson has been willing to hand him the offense.
Against SMU last season, Vizzina completed 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Clemson notes that the 317 passing yards were the fifth-most by a quarterback making his first Clemson start since 1953. Overall, Vizzina completed 45 of 71 passes for 406 yards, four touchdowns and one interception during limited action in 2025.
The challenge is that his first full-time assignment comes in Tiger Stadium against an LSU defense that was quietly much better than the team's final 7-6 record would suggest.
LSU allowed only 19.8 points per game last season and 328.7 total yards per game. Opposing quarterbacks averaged just 204.6 passing yards per game and threw 14 touchdowns against 17 interceptions.
LSU also limited Clemson to only 10 points in last year's meeting.
Clemson does have legitimate weapons on the outside, but Vizzina may not receive the same protection his predecessor enjoyed. The Tigers lost four veteran offensive linemen who combined for 161 career starts, leaving significant turnover up front entering 2026.
That could become one of the biggest matchups of the night.
If Clemson protects Vizzina and allows him to find receivers Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore downfield, the Tigers have a much better chance of forcing LSU into a four-quarter game. If LSU consistently creates pressure without committing extra defenders, Clemson could struggle to sustain drives.
Clemson Offensive Key
Protect Christopher Vizzina.
Clemson doesn't need its new quarterback to throw for 350 yards. It needs to avoid putting him into repeated third-and-long situations in one of the toughest road environments in college football.
When LSU Has the Ball
The LSU offense might be the most fascinating part of this game.
The Tigers scored only 22.8 points per game last season and averaged 333.5 yards of offense. The running game was especially limited, averaging only 104 rushing yards per game and 3.6 yards per carry.
Those numbers help explain why LSU made such dramatic changes.
Enter Lane Kiffin and Sam Leavitt.
Leavitt arrives from Arizona State with significantly more experience than Clemson's new quarterback. In 24 career games, he has thrown for 4,652 yards and 36 touchdowns while adding another 816 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground.
His 2025 season was shortened by injury, but he still completed 145 of 239 passes for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns and only three interceptions in seven starts. He also rushed for 306 yards and five touchdowns. Arizona State went 5-2 in those seven games.
That dual-threat ability matters against Clemson.
Leavitt doesn't necessarily need to dominate through the air if his legs can extend drives and punish Clemson when coverage opens running lanes.
Then there is Kiffin.
His offenses have consistently been built around creating space, stressing defenders horizontally and vertically, and adapting the system to the personnel available. LSU should look considerably different schematically than the offense Clemson faced last August.
But Clemson's defense shouldn't be overlooked.
The Tigers allowed roughly 20.5 points per game last season and finished particularly well, holding their final four regular-season opponents to an average of just 13.2 points per game.
Clemson did lose major defensive talent to the NFL, including Peter Woods and T.J. Parker, so Saturday will immediately test how well those losses have been replaced.
LSU Offensive Key
Establish a running threat Clemson has to respect.
LSU averaged just 104 rushing yards per game last year.
If Kiffin can immediately improve that part of the offense, it creates a much easier environment for Leavitt and makes LSU considerably harder to defend.
5 Stats to Know Before Clemson vs. LSU
1. LSU held Clemson to 10 points last season
Clemson led 10-3 late in the first half of the 2025 meeting but never scored again. LSU's defense shut Clemson out after halftime in the 17-10 victory.
2. LSU allowed fewer than 20 points per game in 2025
Despite LSU finishing just 7-6, its defense allowed 19.8 points per game and only 5.0 yards per play.
3. Clemson finished 2025 much stronger than it started
After beginning the season 3-5, Clemson won its final four regular-season games against Florida State, Louisville, Furman and South Carolina. The Tigers allowed only 13.2 points per game during that run.
4. Sam Leavitt brings proven dual-threat production
Leavitt has already accumulated 4,652 passing yards, 816 rushing yards and 46 total touchdowns during his college career.
That mobility could become especially important if Clemson is able to generate pressure.
5. Clemson's offensive line enters a major transition
Four Clemson offensive linemen who graduated after last season combined for 161 career starts and more than 11,000 offensive snaps.
Breaking in the next version of that unit at LSU is a serious opening-week test.
Players to Watch
Sam Leavitt, QB, LSU
Leavitt is the player we're watching most closely.
His ability to both throw and run gives Lane Kiffin considerably more flexibility than LSU showed offensively last season. He also arrives with experience in major games, including helping Arizona State reach the College Football Playoff in 2024.
The question isn't whether Leavitt has talent. It's how quickly the new LSU offense looks comfortable around him.
Christopher Vizzina, QB, Clemson
There might not be a player in this game facing a tougher assignment.
Vizzina showed legitimate upside in his 317-yard, three-touchdown start against SMU last year.
Now he'll make his first start as Clemson's full-time quarterback on the road at LSU.
How he handles pressure — both from LSU's defense and from the environment — could determine whether Clemson stays within striking distance.
Bryant Wesco Jr., WR, Clemson
Clemson's best path to creating points may be generating explosive plays rather than consistently driving 70-plus yards.
Wesco gives Vizzina a downfield weapon capable of changing field position quickly, making his matchup against LSU's secondary one to watch throughout the night.
Trey'Dez Green, TE, LSU
Green scored the deciding touchdown in last year's matchup, catching an eight-yard pass from Nussmeier in the fourth quarter.
At 6-foot-7, he gives Leavitt a massive target and could become particularly valuable in the red zone.
Three Matchups That Could Decide the Game
Clemson's Offensive Line vs. LSU's Pass Rush
This is No. 1.
Vizzina has weapons, but Clemson's revamped line has to give him enough time to use them.
A few early sacks or negative plays could put Clemson behind schedule and allow LSU's defense to dictate the game.
Sam Leavitt's Mobility vs. Clemson's Front Seven
Clemson cannot simply prepare for Leavitt as a pocket passer.
He rushed for 306 yards and five touchdowns in only seven games last season and has 10 career rushing scores.
Containing him on third down could be the difference between forcing a punt and allowing another LSU scoring opportunity.
Clemson's Defense vs. Lane Kiffin's New Offense
There may be more uncertainty here than anywhere else.
LSU has a new coach, new quarterback and substantial personnel turnover. Clemson's defense has also lost significant NFL talent.
The first few drives could tell us a lot about which side has integrated its new pieces more quickly.
Clemson vs. LSU Score Prediction
LSU 27, Clemson 17
We're giving LSU the advantage, but we're not expecting this game to immediately turn into the offensive fireworks some might associate with Lane Kiffin.
There are too many reasons to respect both defenses.
LSU allowed only 19.8 points per game last season, while Clemson's defense played its best football late in the year. Clemson is also putting a relatively inexperienced quarterback behind a rebuilt offensive line in Tiger Stadium.
The quarterback comparison favors LSU.
Leavitt has 24 games of college experience, has led a team to the College Football Playoff and gives LSU another dimension with his legs. Vizzina has shown enough upside to make Clemson dangerous, but asking him to immediately produce at a high level in Baton Rouge is a difficult assignment.
We expect Clemson's defense to keep the game competitive into the second half before LSU's home-field advantage, quarterback experience and offensive versatility create separation.
Final Score Prediction: LSU 27, Clemson 17
That would put our projected margin at LSU by 10 and our projected game total at 44 points.
With the market currently hovering around LSU -9 to -10.5 and a total near 51.5, our projection is much more decisive on the expected style and scoring level of the game than it is on the spread itself.
And that's an important distinction: a score prediction is not automatically a bet.
The price matters.
